Quizzing rules

II Timothy 2:15 “Study to show thyself approved unto God,

a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

      I. THE PURPOSE OF BIBLE QUIZZING

A. To promote and encourage a regular study of the Word of God.

B. To provide a basis for continued growth in Christ for years to come.

C. To get young people excited about the Word of God.

    II. GENERAL RULES

A. The quiz will consist of twenty-four questions which will be divided into three segments.  Each segment will consist of eight questions each.

B. Questions in all three segments will be given in random order from any part of the chapter.

C. An extra segment of five questions will be used in the case of a tie.  If a quizzer answers any of the tie breaker questions incorrectly, he will be docked ten points.  The questions during the tie breaker segment will only be asked one time.  If a quizzer misses a question, the quiz master will then proceed to the next question.

D. A separate fourth segment, which will follow the three quizzing segments, will be held for quizzers who would like to recite the chapter for team and/or individual points.

E. A quiz team shall consist anywhere from one to nine quizzers.

F. Coaches and quizzers will not be permitted to use a Bible or study materials during the actual quiz segments.

G. Each church will be given the same information at the same time concerning the quiz.

H.  There will be two levels of quizzing each month.  Senior high quiz teams may range from seventh to twelfth grade, or from thirteen years old to eighteen years old.  Either will be considered acceptable.  Junior high quiz teams may range from third to sixth grade, or from nine years old to twelve years old.

I.  An electronic device will be used to determine which quizzer stands first.

J.  All quiz questions will be written from the King James Version Bible.

K. Once a question has been asked, it will not be repeated unless the Quiz Master deems it absolutely necessary.  This should be on very rare occasions, such as, if no quizzer stands to answer the question that was asked.

L. A quizzer may not jump until the first word of the actual question is read.  The first word would not include precursory information such as, “According to Prov. 12:2,” or “In Prov. 12:11.”  The first word would be the very next word after the precursory information, such as, “According to Prov. 12:2, WHAT…”

  III. QUIZ MASTERS

A.  There will be one quiz master in charge of the quiz for that evening.

B.  There will be two judges appointed to each quiz.  They will assist the quiz master with 1.) watching the quiz box, 2.) keeping team and individual scores, and 3.) determining, if need be, if an answer given by a quizzer will be accepted as correct.

C.  Most answers given by quizzers will be required to be verbatim from Scripture.  The acceptance or rejection of each question will be at the sole discretion of the quiz master and judges(if needed).

IV. QUIZZING OUT” AND “ERRORING OUT”

A.  A quizzer will “quiz out” of a segment when he answers two questions correctly, regardless of an error.  If he would like, another quizzer may be substituted for him at this time.

B.  A quizzer will “error out” of a segment when he answers two questions incorrectly.  This will eliminate him from that quiz segment.  There will be no substitute permitted for a quizzer that “errors out”.

C.  Any quizzer that participates in any part of the quiz and leaves the quiz for any reason will not be permitted to return and participate in any of the subsequent segments.

    V. SCORING RULES

A.  Twenty points will be awarded for each correctly answered question.

B.  A ten point penalty will be deducted for each incorrectly answered question.

C.  When a quizzer answers a question incorrectly, he will be disqualified from helping the team for that question only.  The question will be repeated for all others to respond.

D.  A thirty point bonus will be awarded to any quizzer who “quizzes out” of ALL three segments.

E.  Team points from all three segments will be added to the points earned for the team from segment four.  This will give the team their total points earned for that month.

  VI. TIME OUTS

A.  A two minute time out will be given between each segment.  Coaches may confer with their quizzers during this time.

B.  No time outs will be permitted during the segments.

 VII. ANSWERING A QUESTION

A.  The first quizzer whose light comes on will be recognized to give an answer.

B.  A quizzer whose light comes on before the question is complete must finish stating the question that was to be asked before giving an answer.  The quiz master will not repeat the question.

C.  There will never be a time when a question will be asked more than twice.

D.  Once the quizzer has been acknowledged by the quiz master, he will have ten seconds to begin answering the question.  If the quizzer has begun to give his answer and the information given is correct, he will be afforded an additional twenty seconds to complete his answer.

E.  If a quizzer misses a question, then all quizzers will be re-seated, and the question missed will be asked again.

VIII. SEGMENT FOURQUOTING SCRIPTURE

A.  After the Bible quiz is complete, each team may send one quizzer to participate in the chapter quoting segment.  This quizzer may be anyone from the quiz team.

B.  Verses must be quoted in order, word for word from the King James Version.  The judge will announce when the quizzer has misquoted.  At this time, the quizzer has the option to restate the verse correctly without penalty or to receive a “help” from the judge.  Each “help” will be counted as a mistake.  A mandatory help will be given for any quizzer who pauses for more than thirty seconds while quoting the passage.

C.  If a “help” is requested, the judge will give the quizzer the correct word where the mis-quote was made along with the following two words of the verse.  This “help” will count as one mistake.

D.  A mistake will be counted for each “help” afforded by the judge to the quizzer in order that he may continue reciting the chapter.

E.  One point will be deducted per mistake with a maximum of a five point deduction.  The quizzer will be permitted a maximum of five mistakes during this segment.

F.  The quizzer will be awarded three points for each verse he completes in this segment.  Example – If a quizzer quotes thirty verses correctly (including helps), he will receive ninety points minus the number of helps received.

G. The points earned in this segment by the designated quizzer from each team will be counted toward the team quizzing score.  These points will also count toward their individual totals which accumulate until the end of the year.

H.  All other quizzers that are interested in quoting verses for their individual totals (not team totals) may do so at this time as well. These points will not count toward the team totals for the month.  The same rules for quoting scripture will apply to these quizzers as well.

   IX. AWARDS

A.  A banner will be awarded each month to the winning team, which they may keep for display until the next R.I.V. meeting.

B.  At the end of the year a trophy will be awarded to the church with the most points.

C.  First, second, and third place trophies will be awarded to quizzers with the highest individual point totals at the end of the year.  Points will be totaled through the first seven meetings.

D. The top five in point totals for the year will be recognized at the award presentation.

E. The team to receive the most points at the end of year R.I.V. (April) will be permitted to keep the banner on display until the R.I.V. meetings resume the following August.
